When people think about veganism, they feel that it is full of sacrifices – no chocolate, no cheese, no steak! However, this is not the case at all! There are many products available which are similar to these animal products suitable for vegans, and taste almost the same or better. There are great cheese substitutes that grill up perfectly, without the greasiness of dairy cheese, I know which one I’d prefer. And what about soy chocolate? I know some might say “Soy chocolate? Yuck!” but it truly tastes just like dairy chocolate! And you are not just limited to plain soy chocolate, what about soya chocolate with almonds, rice crackle or white chocolate. Plus soy chocolate is so much better for you, with reduced fat and sugar content and provides many health benefits as well.

Now let’s talk about milk alternatives. To the novice, soy milk may seem distasteful, after all its just ground soy beans and water. There are alternatives to soy milk, such as rice milk and almond milk, but after trying these you may appreciate the taste of soya milk. Soy milk has increased in popularity over the last couple of years, which is great for the consumer as we now have many different brands, types eg. reduced fat, no fat and also some brands have introduced flavors such as chocolate, vanilla, cappuccino, and strawberry. So if you don’t like the plain, try one of the flavored varieties, especially the vanilla flavor, as it is a subtle flavor and doesn’t disguise the taste of the soy milk too much. Really, once you get to used to it, you will probably find that there is no way you could go back to cow’s milk. You could also try introducing it into your cooking, until you get used to the slightly nutty taste. Remember though, this is soy milk and does not taste anything like cow’s milk, so it is good to have an open mind before you try it.

Veganism is definitely an easy feat to achieve, especially if you take your side blinkers off and are prepared to step out of your comfort zone and try some new foods. People who are dependent on their weekend barbecues or easy weeknight take-outs may find it a lot harder to change their habits to suit a vegan’s needs. Vegan – Ovo Or Lacto Vegetarians

Why would you want to choose vegetarianism?

I’ll tell you why, because it is the much healthier option. We were not made to eat meat. If you go back to the dawn of time you will find that man – ADAM – had fruit for food and an apple at that. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is why we have that old saying “An Apple A Day, Keeps The Doctor Away”. This in itself says a lot. Think about it for a minute – if we were meant to have meat it would have the first thing ADAM & EVE were to eat not fruit.

All in all going back to years of humans having nothing to eat but plant food such as berries and root vegetables we have some how reached a point that humanity believes that they must eat meat in order to survive. My mother for example tells me that we should eat meat – but when she defines meat she is talking red meat – Lamb – Beef – Veal. Chicken or fish just won’t cut it for her. She says that she gets the shakes without the red meat.

I seriously believe that people get this way because of years upon years of living this diet, and their bodies become so used to it so when they do get this way because they’ve missed a day or two of red meat, of course their bodies are feeling it. It is the same as anything – it is what your body becomes accustomed to.

I decided on becoming a part time Vegetarian a few years back. At that point in my life I had not even heard of the word “Vegan”. I had not idea what true vegetarianism was let alone what all the other types were. I thought you just don’t eat meat and that was that. It took some time, but eventually my body became so used to this way of eating, that when I ate something on the rare occasion, such as meat, my body would do all sorts of horrible things. So it has come to reality that if continually followed this way of eating of the time my body thanked me and I felt a million bucks.

There is however, a lot more to it than that. There are several types of Vegetarians-

Lacto V- no animal products except for milk – cheese – yogurt etc

Vegan – To me these guys are the real vegetarians – they eat nothing that is derived from animal what so ever – no cheese no eggs no milk not even honey as this comes from a living creature I guess that is the logic in it.

There is also –

Ovo-V- eat nothing that comes from animal except for eggs – no dairy – that is milk, yogurt etc

Vegans vs. other types of vegetarianism.

What ever the case you will find that in the long run the ones who eat less red meat or animal products will feel and look a lot better as they grow old as opposed to their carnivore counterparts.

I don’t know about you, but I sure would like to grow old slowly as apposed to get old fast, that’s for sure.…

Well, the title says it all, folks. First of all, perhaps we should talk about why people fart in general. There are two normal causes of gas, the swallowing of air and normal digestion of food. Lets key in on the second cause, digestion. Digestion is the breakdown of food in our bodies. Now, looking at the vegan diet, there are a few specific elements that can be overlooked. Lets break those down, now.

Eating too much fiber too soon. To start off our discussion of fiber, perhaps we should break down the two different kinds of fiber (pun intended), soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber can be broken down by water. Sources of soluble fiber include: oat bran, legumes, peas, and fruit. Insoluble fiber is just the opposite, it never gets broken down as it passes through the body. Now as most of us realize, fiber plays a special role as it allows the body to be cleaned out. However, if we try to digest too much of it without our bodies being used to it, it will cause constipation. So we have to be patient and introduce fiber in moderation. Drinking enough water is key here as fiber can’t pass without it.

A diet based on legume protein. Legumes are a great source of protein in the vegan diet, as they are low in fat and high in protein. We can find legumes almost everywhere when it comes to substitutions, from black bean patties to the base of vegan brownies. However, we’ve all heard it since we were kids, beans give you gas. The thing is they don’t have to, that’s only a myth. The reason legumes create gas during digestion is because your body can’t break down the complex sugars, oligosaccharides, on the coating of legumes. There is a simple solution for this, folks. Let your legumes soak before cooking with them and that problem is eliminated!

Combining foods improperly. Although, some don’t realize it, conscious food combining is key to proper digestion. At the root of food combining it is important to keep one thing in mind, proteins and starches tend not to mix well. Proteins and starches are broken down differently in the body. When eaten together it can reap havoc on the body, as a byproduct, causing gas. Now there is one exception to this rule, rice is the only starch that doesn’t cause gas.

In conclusion gas is a normal part of digestion. Be mindful of the combinations of food in your diet. Legumes are an excellent source of vegan protein. Just make sure they are prepared properly. Be gentle with your body when incorporating fiber into your diet. Drink plenty of water in order to help you digest it. Eat consciously and enjoy!…
